Using the downloaded version of TurboTax, the original return is not referenced or opened, so essentially by clicking on "amend return" I have to re-do my entire 2021 tax return and I can't tell if its using form 1040X. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Where is your original return? Do you have the .tax2021 file on your computer? You need to first open that return. Or when you click on Amend doesn't it look for the 2021 return? It should find it or let you browse to where it is. Are you on Windows or Mac?
I'm on Windows and started my 2021 program. It should show your return in a big box at top and say Continue on it. Then I clicked on Amend at the bottom and the Continue button changed to Amend. I made a screen shot
You can switch to Forms mode to see what it is filling out.
Don't you get this far?
Hi,
I'm using a download version for Mac. When I open the federal return that I want to amend, there is no button or link for amending. If I open TurboTax, but not a specific return file, there is a link for amending a return, but at no time going through the steps does it ask what file I want to amend nor does is prompt me to open the file.
My Turbo Tax application does not have the screen you included. When I open my 2021 file, it opens right to "easy steps" personal information input.
Thoughts?
Sorry I don't know the Mac program. But can you open your original return? Then try going to
Federal Taxes -or- Personal (for H&B)
Other Tax Situations
last section, Other Tax Forms
Amend A Return - Click the Start or Update button
Thank you. I think I now have an edited version of my 2021 federal return. It's not intuitive on how to finish after making changes, but I'll click on "file return" and see if it gets me to a print option.
I may have to reach back out, but you have been very helpful. Thank You.
Huh? You can't just edit your return. You have to start the Amended return first using the original filed return.
Correct. I figured out how to get an amended return started and am not making changes.
Thanks again.
