Hi all,
I amended my 2019 tax return, and I ended up owing money (my original refund was higher than what is should've been, thus I ended up owing money). I paid the IRS online. I added the payment confirmation number on the 1040X, then mailed the amended return (2019 was done by mail).
Fast forward a month or two, I got a check in the mail from the IRS for the exact amount I paid them upon amending my return. They literally sent back my payment.
I paid immediately to halt the interest and penalties... but now I have a check for that same amount. I'd imagine the IRS hasn't processed my amended return. My IRS "account" says I owe them $0.
Should I cash the check and wait for the IRS to send me a letter I owe them, and then pay them again online? Calling the IRS has so far been impossible. I have proof I paid them a long time ago, so I'd imagine the penalties/interest should have stopped by then.
Any ideas on what to do? Thanks!

Deposit the check and move on. You have taken reasonable steps to make the payment. Keep good records in case it comes up again.

Thank you DMarkM1.
Yes, I think I'll just deposit it. I'm sure whenever the IRS catches this they'll just request payment thru the normal methods (and not ask the check be returned by mail), and then I'll just do the payment online just like the first time I did.
