Amended form

Hello,

I had not gotten a 1099-G for unemployment when I filed/submitted. I got back a return and my state return was automatically adjusted by the state. I need to file an amended form. When I do this, it shows a SIGNIFICANT amount owed in the estimate area. To cross check, I went through and entered in my information again in a mock return. It shows the amounts that I received from my returns.

How will I know if I owe in any taxes to federal ? It appears that my State auto adjusted and sent me the correct amount as a refund.

Please advise.

Most states are not mailing paper 1099-G forms to taxpayers. You should log in to your account and download a copy of the form. The actual form reports the actual taxes withheld for federal and/or state. If you have your 1099-G form now, you can start the amendment process and see if there is any balance due or refund. If there is no difference, you don't need to amend your federal return. You can also check to see if your state made the correct adjustment.

    Hi,

No we got the 1099-G back, and there are major differences. In fact it now states  I owe a considerable amount to both federal and state. However, in one area it says I owe 200 to Federal and nothing to state. However, the "estimator" refund balance notes red balances of over 1000 for each. How do we know what is the correct amount.

The best course of action is to start amending your return by entering the 1099-G form. The amended return is based on your filed return, so the refund or balance due will be accurate. If you owe if you had entered the 1099-G form in the first place, but instead you received a refund, the refund is added back to the balance due, making the balance due bigger, but you are essentially paying back the refund you received.
