I have two questions. Firstly I’m using desktop 2023. Basically, all I want to do is amend my status from HOH to single with no dependents. That should be a simple 1040X whereby the status is changed and then the deduction is changed. But turbo tax takes me through all the screens and when I check forms above I don’t even see a 1040X form it just looks as though I’m sending in a new return with the adjusted info rather than just the 1040X. Is this how it should be?
Secondly, in the original, I had a federal refund of about $1500. Now it’s showing I owe $166. Does that total take account of my original $1500 refund so I would just pay $166 or does it mean I would now need to pay back the $1500 refund originally given to me in addition to the $166 I now owe? I'm assuming the latter but would love to get your expertise.
Thanks!

Did you follow the steps for TurboTax Desktop in the following FAQ?
How do I amend my federal tax return for a prior year?
I did yes!
You need the 1040X. Switch to Forms Mode and see if it’s there and filled out.
Then….
You will still get the refund from the first original return or still need to pay the first tax due. In fact you should not even amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund or your tax due payment has cleared.
Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe. I think the cover sheet shows what the original return WOULD have been if you did it right the first time.
Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.
If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V. Just include a check with the 1040X. Ignore the 1040V. That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting. Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V. Pay the amount on the actual 1040X line 20.
Yeah, that was my main question. I don't see a 1040X in the forms, just a regular 1040 and then a 1040V.
When you got to the screen shown in the screen shot below, did you select "Yes, I've already filed my return," and then "I need to amend my 2023 return"? If you selected those answers, Form 1040-X would have been created as soon as you clicked Continue. But when this screen first comes up, No is selected by default. If you clicked Continue without selecting Yes, TurboTax would then take you "through all the screens," which is what you said happened, and it would not create Form 1040-X. If you did not get this screen asking whether you already filed, then you did not follow the steps in the FAQ that I posted above.
At this point, do not try to fix the amended return that you started. Start over with the .tax2023 file from your original tax return. Carefully follow the steps in the FAQ, and read all the screens carefully.
