I never received a 1099-R for a 401-K withdrawal. Thus forgetting to include it with my 2020 1040. I amended my 2020 1040 and submitted 1040X. With the 1040X I submitted 8915-E Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Repayments. I selected to spread the taxable amount over 3 years. I have two questions:
1. Turbo Tax printed out 2021 Form 1040-ES Payment Vouchers. I'm guessing I need to send in those payments ASAP because they were due in 2021. This leads into Question 2.
2. How do I amend my 2021 1040 using Turbo Tax where Turbo Tax knows I amended 2020? And how does the Payments get accounted for? And how does Turbo Tax know about the spreading of Tax over 3 years.

1. Turbo Tax printed out 2021 Form 1040-ES Payment Vouchers. I'm guessing I need to send in those payments ASAP because they were due in 2021. This leads into Question 2. NO ... it is too late to send in 2021 estimatated payments.
2. How do I amend my 2021 1040 using Turbo Tax where Turbo Tax knows I amended 2020? You amend the 2021 return the same way you amended the 2020 return using the downloaded 2021 program.
And how does the Payments get accounted for? Since they were never made they are not accounted for.
And how does Turbo Tax know about the spreading of Tax over 3 years. By using the correct forms on the 2020, 2021 & 2022 returns to report the 1/3 of the original distribution ... simply answer the questions posed in the 1099-R section even if you don't have a 1099-R to enter on the 2021 & 2022 returns.
And you have to start the 2021 amended return with the original 2021 that was filed. Then make the changes manually. It won't know about the 2020 amended return.
Do not send any estimated tax payments as indicated by @Critter-3. For 2021, the estimated tax payments cannot be made. You will send any tax due with your amended return, of if filed electronically, with a voucher that TurboTax will provide, or direct debit to your bank account.
It is very important to pay any tax due as soon as possible to reduce the interest and penalty for late payment. It must be paid once the amended tax return is complete.
To amend 2021 taxes you would go back to the tax year 2021 software you used to prepare your original return, either TurboTax Desktop or TurboTax Online Account (Documents on left hand menu).
TurboTax knows about the spreading of the 3 years by you electing this on the software program. It specifically asks if this was a "Disaster Distribution", you would answer yes and follow the guided steps for both your amended 2021 return and your original 2022 tax return.
Tax Tips
Note: Reporting over the three year payback provision for a qualified disaster distribution as of 1/16/2022 the form is not readily available for use yet, it is coming soon. You can continue to check at this link (Form 8915) - When will my forms be available for TurboTax Online?
