I filed a 2020 on-line return as a single taxpayer just coming off of parents return as a dependent. The taxpayer qualified for the Recovery Rebate Credit and this amount appeared in the calculated refund from Line 30 of the 1040. I neglected to uncheck the Someone can claim you as a dependent box. When the IRS processed the return the Recovery Rebate was disallowed for this reason. Now I need to amend but when I go into TurboTax to amend, there is no change calculated because the return was changed by the IRS.
Do I need to file a paper amendment or is there a way to amend using TurboTax electronic submission process?
Thanks

Since the IRS already adjusted your original 2020 tax return there is no need to file an amended return for the adjustment. You file the amended tax return to change your dependency to being claimed as a dependent.
See this TurboTax support FAQ on amending a tax return originally completed and filed using the 2020 TurboTax editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-my-return/01/27439
The 2020 amended tax return can only be printed and mailed to the IRS since e-filing was closed for new tax returns after October 15, 2021.
Did you use Turbo Tax? It would not give you the Recovery rebate credit on line 30 if you checked you were a dependent. Something isn't right.
"Something isn't right."
TurboTax is not set up for this.
First you have to change your dependent status in the Personal Info.
Second, you have to go through the stepbystep section that covers the Rebate Credit Questions.
I'm not sure where that is.
I think it's in the FILE step, but you already filed.
If you are successful with these steps, then that info should appear on your 1040-X form line 15 (Other)
Write "Rebate Credit" in the "specify" space if TurboTax doesn't put that down for you.
Thanks, that's what I thought and why I overlooked it. It gave me the credit with the box checked.
I'll give this a shot. When I tried to amend initially it showed no change so nothing to amend because it transmitted with the Recovery Rebate included. I will make a last ditch effort with it tonight and file paper if I cannot change.
since you initially filed for the Rebate Credit having this amount on line 15 Col A and Col C is strictly correct.
It is your exemption status that denied it.
The only way to change your exemption status is to put in Part III Explanation that you are amending to set "no one can claim me".
The tricky part is your refund payment was adjusted downward by IRS (1040-X line 18)
you have to enter that adjusted value on line 18 so that you get a refund on line 22 equal to your EIP1 + EIP2.
TurboTax makes this part difficult.
For that reason you might have to file on paper.
NOTE: if you are not changing any amounts originally filed, you don't have to fill out Columns A,B,C
You can leave that all blank.
You can get the 1040-X in fillable PDF format on IRS website.
In this case (unless I'm missing something) there are no related Forms or Schedules changing that you would have to attach.

After all that, expect to wait six months or more for IRS to approve your emended tax return.

Of course, this all assumes you were not listed as a dependent on any other person's tax return.
