I just received my 1098-T form from my college. How do I amend? Turbo Tax won’t let me do it on the app. And I submitted everything on the 10th. Nothing is pending. I’m just waiting to get my state tax return mailed to me.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
The amendment form (1040X for Federal) will not be available in TurboTax until 2/27/20, BUT that could change. Once the form becomes available you can then amend your return. Do not make any changes to your original filed return.
Amend returns must be mailed & they can take up to 16 weeks to be processed.
If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.” If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.” You must file a separate Form 1040X for each tax return you are amending.
Three weeks after mailing your amended return, you can start tracking it at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? tracking tool. Please allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended
@JenUser0306 No one here can call you. Also, no one here, not even TurboTax would know who claimed you. Unfortunately, the IRS cannot disclose who claimed you.
If you’re filing a current year return, you may receive a rejection due to your dependent’s social security number. In this case, you should double-check that you reported their SSN correctly.
If it is reported correctly, you will need to paper file your return; meaning you must print, sign and mail your return to the IRS. You cannot e-file it since the IRS will reject it again.
You may receive a CP87A Notice which notifies each party that if they incorrectly claimed you, they need to file an amended tax form. If you can rightfully claim yourself, you do not need to respond to this notice. In order to dispute the claim of someone claimed you, you will need to attach a cover letter along with your tax return explaining your circumstance, proof of why you’re entitled to claim yourself.
This entire process takes 8 to 12 weeks since the IRS needs to gather all the information to examine and determine the results from both returns. If you have further questions, you can contact the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

If someone claims you as a dependent and he/she was not entitled to do so, then the only solution for you is to file by mail.
Both you and the person claiming you will receive a letter from the IRS asking for details of the dependency claim and the IRS will make a decision.

I did these steps in February and still haven't heard or recieved anything back. When I go to the IRS site it says my information is invalid. I recieved a letter in the mail and mailed all the appropriate info back to them and still nothing. When I call their help line its auto.ated and literally doesn't help with anything I need. I just want to talk to a real person to help me get this all taken care of but none of the help lines are answered by real people it's just stupid useless automation. How do you get in contact with an actual human being?

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
Thanks for the help. I got close but apparently they're having "extremely high call volumes" or whatever no one answers and then the automation tell you to go to the site and it hangs up on you. I'll keep trying though and I really appreciate the help.
