I need to amend my 2017 tax returns, and so, I downloaded my tax file and Turbotax Desktop 2017 (for Mac).
When I try to open my return, the app says:
"The Tax return you are attempting to open contains one or more state tax forms which are not install on this machine . Please install California to conitune".
After installing California, the app says the state is installed successfully. But then, it shows me the message about California not being installed on the machine!!!!
I filed my tax online.

Are you able to restart your Mac after you download the state program and see if that makes a difference? See if that simple maneuver makes any difference.
Also try this. Since you have the full 2017 Mac software, start a dummy new 2017 tax return. Just a little personal info (real or fake) to get started, then go to download the state program. Then save that file. You can delete that dummy file later if this works once you are squared away.
Then close TurboTax and restart your Mac.
Then try to open your actual 2017 return file. Does it work now?
Rebooting the machine did not help.
I started a new refund, but I am seeing a tab on the left hand side saying "CA Not Installed". When I click on Download button, it install the state , but the tab is still there. Restarting the app did not help.
Oh my, there is another problem. Right after I posted the above, I noticed you are using the Basic Edition for Mac. At least that is what is indicated right under your question.
The Basic Edition does not include a state program. How did you end up with Basic Edition? What edition did you use in Online TurboTax? Since you had stocks, you had to have have used Premier Edition or higher.
When you asked for the Mac amend software, they should have furnished you Deluxe or higher in order to have an included state program.
If you really have Basic Edition, you'll need to phone TurboTax Support and ask them to resolve the state issue and either furnish you the state software to install into Basic, or to furnish you a higher product that includes a state program (Deluxe or higher). Since you have stocks, I'd ask for Premier.
Or did you purchase Basic Edition to do this amended return not knowing that TurboTax will provide the 2017 software free to amend a 2017 online return?

Did you use this form to get your amend software for Mac? It has a place to select which product you used online, which I expect was Premier or higher.
I don't know how you ended up with Basic Edition. Please phone TurboTax Support during the day and ask them to straighten everything out. The contact info is in my first comment above.
It sounds like you need to do A total uninstall and re-install.
Corruption could have occurred in the Application or in an associated preference or support file.
The best remedy is to totally uninstall TurboTax and all associate files and then re-install. That will not delete or change any .tax2018 data file that had already been created with the tax data.
To uninstall the application and all associated files need to be deleted and then the application reinstalled. If there was a state then the state must also be reinstalled.
