What about the second part of my question? Since the interest expense will equal the dividends lost on the short sale, will the taxes wash out?
the dividends you pay out on short shares is the cost of doing business as a short-seller.
If there is interest, that depends on your broker. and is not related to dividends.
My broker said the dividends you pay out when you are short a stock is treated as interest expense.
Your broker reports the dividend income to you even though it is taken out of your account and paid to the owner of the put.
