Why does my TT account say I still owe tax due?
TT does not update after your return has been accepted. Your account will always show the result of the return you prepared using the software. TurboTax never knows if you received your refund —or how, when or even if you paid tax due. Your proof that you paid your tax will be your own bank/credit card records.
Thank you for your reply.
But saying "TT does not update after your return has been accepted." make no sese. Because I have input the paid amount to the "paid tax" section. And this information should be output to the PDF file(This information is also required by tax return if you have paid tax due in the extension)
The problem now is, looks the turbotax online accepted my input of amount $3372 for paid tax(when you close and reopen web browser, you can see the field has been fulfilled with $3372), but the output file in related form is not reflecting this, which means, when I file the tax return after 4/15, the turbotax software/online will still ask me to pay the due amount(even I have told turbotax I have paid the amount in the extension)
BTW, after input the paid amount(for both Federal Due and State Due), while the Federal Due is still $3372, the State Due become $0 from $1285. This indicating that the Due amount will be changed after input the paid tax amount, but we don't know why federal due showin has an issue while State Due showing correctly.
Replied here to confirm this issue has NOT been resolved.
I believe this is a tech/website issue instead of a tax scope issue.
@linunix You are confusing what shows up on your actual tax return with what shows up on your online TT account. Your online TT account will never display that you paid tax due. It only shows the results of the tax return that you prepared using the software. If you actually entered a payment you made--like an estimated payment--into the software--it will show up on your tax form and will be part of the calculations of whether you still owe more or get a refund. Your online account with TurboTax shows if a return was accepted or rejected, and will show if the return was supposed to receive a refund or had tax due.
So you are saying the $3372 paid with extension is not showing up on schedule 3 line 10 which goes to 1040 line 31? Where did you enter it in the program? If your return still shows you owe it on 1040 line 37 then say you will mail a check and the IRS should match your tax due with the payment.
Thank you for your reply.
The confusing thing is, when I input the paid amount for State Tax, the TT account display the amount become $0 from $1285. When I input $3372 as paid tax amount to TT. TT still display $3372 for federal. I don't know why the logic is different between Federal and State. Again, TT might not know if I paid the tax or not, but I input the amount on TT online website HTML form, so I am expecting that TT knew it.
I understand if TT display will not show the paid tax, but the problem is here, if I work on the tax form/PDF manually, I need to input the paid tax amount in certain tax form field. So, If I told TT the paid tax amount, and TT help to generate a tax form, the field which I need to input manually is expected to be automatically input by TT.
But the fact is, when I told the paid tax amount to TT, and then TT generated the tax form for me, I did see the field in the tax form/PDF is empty. Which mean, I need to input the field by myself. Which means, I need to print the tax form and input it manually and mail the paper tax form. Which means, E-file might not be working because TT can't input this paid amount field for me.
No the amount paid should be on your 1040 tax return. You must have entered it in the wrong place. Hopefully the federal payment didn't show up on your state return. Federal goes here.......
Federal Taxes (or Personal tab for desktop H&B version)
Deductions and Credits
Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button
Next page second section Payments with Extension
Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid
For 2024 Federal Extension payments should be on schedule 3 line 10. And go to 1040 line 31.
So you are saying the $3372 paid with extension is not showing up on schedule 3 line 10 which goes to 1040 line 31?
-- correct. Still now showing up on schedule 3 line 10 and said I still owe the the due amount $3372
Where did you enter it in the program?
-- I input here: Tax Home -> Deductions and Credits -> Income Taxes Paid -> Payments with Extension -> Payments with 2024 federal extension(showing the amount $3372 I input to TT HTML form)
If your return still shows you owe it on 1040 line 37 then say you will mail a check and the IRS should match your tax due with the payment.
-- That's the problem here, I already paid $3372 thru TT extension portal. I am not saying TT should know this after I paid in the TT extenstion. But I have input the amount $3372 to Tax Home -> Deductions and Credits -> Income Taxes Paid -> Payments with Extension -> Payments with 2024 federal extension in TT Tax home, but TT still can't generate the schedule 3 correctly
you know what your tax is and what you paid.
If you already paid too much because TurboTax said so, IRS computers will find your overpayment and you will get a check.
Otherwise, pay what you owe in tax minus amounts already paid.
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I knew what I paid. And TT online provide a section in the HTML page to input the amount I already paid. But looks like this section/field in the TT online HTML page is invalid at least for now.
(Tax Home -> Deductions and Credits -> Income Taxes Paid -> Payments with Extension -> Payments with 2024 federal extension)
Of course, I have various ways to get the money back, or I can print the tax form from TT online and I can fulfill with a pen manually and then ship it out, but as you can see, e-file not working correctly.
So it's still disappointed that I have to go with some workarounds because TT can't generate the tax form correctly.
If I paid TT online premium with money and TT can't generate tax form correctly, and I can't get support for this tech bug, I think I will never use TT online any more.
I used TT desktop from year 2016 and looks everything was good, but I don't think TT online is mature enough for usage for now.
