Add Dependent W2 in Amending Tax Return

My federal and state tax return have been accepted and processed. However, I I forgot to add my son's (dependent) W2. When I select the Amend a Filed Return option and select Update W-2, my only choices are to edit  my W-2 or add another W2 for myself or edit my wife's W2 or add another W2 for my wife.

There is no option to add a W2 for my dependent. How do I add my son's W2?

Your son'w W-2 does not go on your own tax return, so there is no need for you to amend your return.

    MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB

If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return.  He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.  (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!)

If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.  You may want to use this version of TT for that:

If you started an official Form 1040X amended return that you don't need, you can undo/cancel it and return your tax file to its original "as filed" state.  Otherwise, the PDF and *.tax2020 data file will always show it as an amended return.

If you made any changes in the return after you started the amended return, you'll also need to manually change it back to like it was when filed.

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one.  To file a separate return for your dependent you need to set up a new account.  Online is only good for one return per account.  You can use the same email address for 5 accounts.  They can probably use the Free Edition.  How to start a new online return

Or the Free File website.  In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website.  Click on the Orange button I Qualify, Let's get Started

Be sure on their return they check the box that says they can be claimed on someone else’s return.  If their only income is W2 and under 12,400 they do not have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out.

your son's w-2 does not get reported on your 1040. if he's required to file or wants to file to get back any excess withholding, then it goes on his return. his state's filing requirement is different.

Single dependents. Was he either age 65 or older or blind?
No. he must file a return if any of the following apply.
    • his unearned income was over $1,100.
    • his earned income was over $12,400.
    • his gross income was more than the larger of—

          • $1,100, or
          • his earned income (up to $12,050) plus $350.
