2024 Amended 1040-SR Return

We filed our joint 2024 1040, but received an additional 1099R after it was accepted. I thought I had filed an amended return but it doesn't indicate anything when I print. (It increased our refund amount which shows on the final screen but not when I print) We haven't received any notice that it was accepted. Not sure what to do.

I would check this link:  https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return.

If you do not see anything there, I would set and and look at your IRS account and see if there is any record.

IRS Individual Online Account

  • Taxpayers with a Social Security number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number can create or access their IRS Individual Online Account to get information they need to file their return.
  • With an IRS Individual Online Account, people can:
  • View balance owed, payment history and schedule payments.
  • Cancel scheduled payments.
  • Get transcripts.
  • View or create payment plans.
  • See digital copies of some IRS notices.
  • View key data from their most recently filed tax return, including adjusted gross income.
  • Validate bank accounts and save multiple accounts, eliminating the need to re-enter bank account information every time they make a payment.
  • View, approve and electronically sign power of attorney and tax information authorizations from their tax professional.

2024 Amended 1040-SR Return

I read in another post that you should wait until the original is processed and (in our case) any refund is issued and THEN file the amended return. Again our refund will increase because of the new 1099. I just chose file an amended return and added the missed 1099. By doing that the refund amount increased in the "amount of refund" box on the top of your screen. When I print the 1040 however it shows the original amount. We have not received any communication from IRS about any amended return and checking their site shows nothing.

You could not have amended correctly.   The 1040X form that you need for that will not become available until mid - to late February.   It sounds like you just went back into the software and messed with your already filed return and tried to make changes to add the 1099R.  That does not work.  You cannot make changes to a return that has been e-filed until the IRS processes it fully and you use a Form 1040X to amend.

If you made changes to the first return you filed, change it back to its original information.   When you amend you have to be able to work with the Form 1040 exactly as it appeared when you filed it and sent it to the IRS.

Then sit tight and wait for the IRS to process your first return.   You can amend later in February.

Wait until your original return has been fully processed before you amend, and make sure you have saved a pdf of the original return before you amend.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a tax return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/amend-change-correct-return-a...

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.
