Both my federal and state returns have been accepted. But I forgot to add another W2. I made only about $80 on that missing W2. After some calculations, adding that missing W2 lowered my federal refund by about $15. But did not change refund amount on my state return.
My question is, should I still file amended return for the state even the refund amount did not change?
And when I try to do amending returns on Turbotax, it is showing me amending returns are not available right now because IRS are still working on 2021. When will Turbotax update software to make it available ?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner. The IRS does not allow you to take it back.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
Do not try to amend until your original refund has been fully processed. The 1040X will not be available until late Feb./early March----and your issue is a very minor one. There is no urgency----you have plenty of time.
Thank you for your help! I will wait until it's fully processed. Once my returns are fully processed, do I still needs to amend my STATE return even though the missing(forgot) W2 did not change my ORIGINAL refund amount?
Yes, you will also have to file an amended state return. It is unusual that you had a second W-2, and the state withholding taxes were EXACTLY correct. Be sure that boxes 15, 16, and 17 are filled out.
Thanks! To be specific here, I was a part time resident in two different states (both states have reciprocal agreement). The missing W2 is in the states that I've moved into permanently. Do I still have to amended the other state returns as well? ( again, the missing W2 it's only for 1 state)
You don't need to amend the state return if your tax did not change there. However, once you amend the federal return the state return will be amended as well, so you can file it without much additional work if you want to.
