2021 Stimulus Check

When I filed my 2020 taxes, I made the mistake of selecting “I can be claim as a dependent” but no one never claim me. So would I still get the 2021 stimulus check even though I selected I can be claimed as a dependent but no one never did? 
(I do know that I have to go back and amend my taxes)

Hello everyone I wish everyone get there taxes quickly this year. My son and daughter already got theirs. I still haven't received mine from 2019 but God will provide 🙏

The rules for claiming a dependent are relevant and they are not optional. If you do not pay more than half of your own support, then you will not be allowed to claim yourself or be independent.  This is a rule on who has the right to claim a dependent. If your parents or someone else paid more than half of your support (living expenses and college as example), then only they can claim you.  

If you are eligible to be independent you are correct, an amended return must be completed. 

The return must be processed, accepted by the IRS. You have time, the Form 1040-X is scheduled for availability later this month.  This is a normal timeframe for release.

I know the elements of being able to file as a dependent and independent. My question is I selected “someone can claim me” while doing my 2020 taxes and my mother never added me as a dependent on her 2020 taxes I am eligible to get the 2021 stimulus check for $1,400?

But do you qualify as her dependent?  Even if she doesn't claim you then you still have to say you CAN be claimed if you qualify as a dependent.  If you don't qualify then you have to amend your return.  Sorry I don't know how the new Stimulus payment will work.  But dependents wouldn't get it based on their own return.

I already have to go back and change it, so no she didn’t claim me. That’s already been established. I can’t fix it until TurboTax release the form for me to amend my taxes. My question is and has always been can I get the 2021 stimulus check even though when I filed my 2020 taxes I selected “can be claim as a dependent” but no one claim me as a dependent. So I’m a dependent but no one is carrying me as such so I have to go back and change it to become independent. I just wanna know as for now since the 2021 stimulus check has been signed into law will I be able to get in now with my current status with the irs? Which is being a dependent but no one has claimed me as a dependent. I know the elements of being a dependent and a independent.

You will qualify for the 2021 payment but you are in an odd situation, so it is impossible to determine when you will get it at this point.  It just depends on what information they have and use when they start processing, but you will get it, although it may not arrive immediately.  The following is the only information we have at this point:  

Do I need to apply to get a stimulus check?

You don’t need to do anything to get your stimulus check. The IRS will determine eligibility based on your last tax return (either 2019 or 2020) and will likely send your payment to the bank account where your tax refund was deposited. If you haven’t filed your 2020 return yet, you can do that now to give your most recent information to the IRS, including bank account or address information to help ensure your stimulus check goes to the right place.  It is all about the timing here.  Since you can e-file amendments this year, you may not have much of a delay, but as I mentioned earlier, it is impossible to know when you will get it.

The IRS has not announced a date yet, but we will provide an update here as soon as it becomes available.
