Having just filed (one week ago) 2021 taxes, I realized I need to amend them by removing my son from the list of dependents. Taxes have been accepted originally at the federal and state level . Once 1040-X e-filing became available in TurboTax, I started the process of correction, by conducting two simple steps:
- removal of the dependent
- removal of the 1099-T form from the record
TurboTax seems to properly identify the differences, by identifying the two owed by me now amounts (the diffs from the original, larger amounts owed to me by both federal and state), post the above two changes, so this makes sense.
Questions:
1. During the checkup TurboTax prompts me with the following "Check This Entry": "1099-T Wks (<specific university name>): A link to the Taxpayer or Spouse Student Worksheet must be made if the student is the taxpayer or spouse, or link to a dependent below if one of them is a student", but there is nothing "below", and I have no option then to press "Continue"
Once I click "Continue", another "Check This Entry" comes up, with the following content: "1098-T Wks (<university name>): A link to a Dependent Worksheet must be made if the student is a dependent, or link to the taxpayer or spouse above if one of them is the student" - again with just "Continue" option, but now with a 1098(?!?) and nothing "above"
Any idea how this info is still being asked for, when I actually deleted the 1099-T when I started the 1040-X process?
2. If I continue with the process (once understanding the above, and running the 1040-X to completion), are the amounts I owe to federal and state actually going to be subtracted by IRS from the original amount they owed me (assuming they have not had the time to process the original - very likely, at this time), or am I supposed to:
a. wait for the actual return, then send what I owe to them
b. is TurboTax going to prompt me for a method of payment of what I would owe, according to 1040-X, *prior* to actually being able to get the originally filed refunds
c. Else?!?

You did not say specifically how you deleted Form 1098-T when you were amending your return. First, revisit the education expense section of your return and see if there is still a Form 1098-T shown on a summary page in that section that you can delete by clicking a trash can icon or a Delete button. Even if there was an empty form left in the return, the error messages would want to tie it to an individual.
If you did not find a Form 1098-T on a summary page, try using the steps shown in the following TurboTax help article to be sure that the form has been deleted from your return:
How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online?
As for your second question, it is asking why you are changing your state return. You would select that it Is due to something you changed on your Federal return. You would not need to select both Federal and state in this case. Selecting 'state' would mean you were changing something pertaining only to your state return, like a state-specific credit for example.
Yes - you can amend the already accepted 2021 tax return. However, you should wait until your return is processed to eliminate confusion. Allow the return to process then use the following steps to amend. also, you will need to access the Education interview section to change your answers or try to delete all education forms. TurboTax will prompt you for payment based on the amended return. Your original return has , most likely, not been processed yet. Another reason to allow your original return to process first.
Ultimately, you can send what you owe along with the amended return or wait to be billed..
There are a few things you need to know before you can start the amendment process:
When you're ready to amend, select your product below and follow the instructions.

Thank you for the response, in regards to timing the amendment, but I still can't understand why the two prompts with not ability other than to choose continue occur. I am trying to prep the amendment for when it is appropriate to send (per your recommendation - post receipt of the original return), but I am concerned about items which are detected by TurboTax as "in error", but have no means to fix. As I said, I deleted the form, already, so I am not sure where the info about such is still "cached", especially as it identifies the school having been attended by my son.
I am sorry for coming back to this, but maybe I need to provide the complete info again: while processing the amendment in TurboTax, by eliminating the dependent record and associated 1099-T, all works well up until the last stage of the process, when - during the final check - TurboTax comes back with the followings:
"Check This Entry
1098-T Wks (<university my son attended, which I thought I removed by removing the 1099-T>): A link to a Dependent Worksheet must be made if the student is a dependent, or link to the taxpayer or spouse above if one of them is the student
Continue"
NOTE above: 1098-T (not 1099) and nothing below or above (?!?) so the only option is to choose Continue, which then brings the following screen (identical to the previous one):
"Check This Entry:
1098-T Wks (<university my son attended>): A link to a Dependent Worksheet must be made if the student is a dependent, or link to the taxpayer or spouse above if one of them is the student
Continue"
Q: how/where do I go and what do I need to fix?!?
then (after the "Continue" above):
"Check This Entry:
Form <my state>-1040-X: Why changed checkboxes must be entered:
__ No entry
__ Federal change box
__ NOL change box <--- ?!?
__ State change box"
I assume the "why" may imply choosing the Federal, but I am not sure. There is no way to choose two (Federal and State), although the amendment affects both.
Would appreciate some guidance here ... TIA

Thank you! You got me on the right track! Took me a while, so maybe an update to the instructions would be desirable, as there is no "Tax Tools -> Tools" menu option, but rather a "Forms" menu option, which led me to the listing of forms "left behind", thus allow me to finally delete the 1098.
You are using a desktop program which behaves completely differently than browser-based TurboTax Online.
