Online TurboTax can only prepare a 2019 return at this point in time. If you want to use TurboTax, then for a 2017 return, you'll need to use 2017 desktop software (CD/download). A 2017 return cannot be efiled; it has to be printed, signed, dated, and mailed.

The 2017 return cannot be efiled. It will need to be printed, signed, dated, and mailed. It's a good idea to mail by a method that has tracking, such as certified mail, priority mail, etc.

If you have both Federal and state returns, you need to mail each one separately to its respective tax agency.

If you are due a Federal refund, it takes about 6 weeks for the IRS to process a mailed return and deliver the refund.

Another option would be to download blank 2017 tax forms at the IRS website and fill them out manually for free.

The link above to purchase past software originally was for the 2018 purchase page, not 2017. I've revised the link above, and it should now take you directly to the 2017 page to buy 2017 desktop software. You may have been emailed the original answer that had the 2018 link instead of 2017.
