I received both a federal K-1 form (1041) and a California state K-1 form (541), but Turbo Tax is only guiding me to complete using information from the federal 1041. What happens with the state form 541?

" What happens with the state form 541?"
That form has nothing to do with your federal income tax return.
You will have to enter the information that appears on the form into your state income tax return.

There is no corresponding entry screen for a CA 541 from an estate/trust as there is for a K-1 from S-Corps or Partnership. Compare the CA K-1 to the federal version. If there are any differences you can enter them in your CA return using these steps:

If you have California withholding reported on form 541, you need to attach it to your California return.
TurboTax did not tell me to do that so six weeks after filing I got a letter from the FTB saying that I needed to pay instead of getting a refund. (I got the 541 from the CPA who prepared the final return for the estate / trust.)
How do I enter a California K-1 (541) in my personal trust tax return 1041 using Turbo Tax Business 2020? I entered the Federal K-1 (1041) amounts just fine when using the step-by-step data entry option under the FEDERAL TAXES tab, but there is no data entry in step-by-step option nor the forms option to enter the K-1 (541) in the STATE TAXES tab. I need to tell Turbo Tax Business that there are California Adjustments in Column (C) of the K-1 (541) that need to be entered? Thank you.
This was a very confusing issue that I finally resolved. We TTax users usually expect to be able search TTax forms for a Form or Schedule for any specialty issue. But when using a TTax Home & Business (or similar) as an heir there isn't one. I wrestled with this for more than a week.
1.) But I finally found a great resource - and discovered there that you - as a California non-resident beneficiary - NEVER DIRECTLY CREATE AND USE a '541 as you would, for example, enter a 1099 Div - where you're creating an exact 1099-DIV and typing the data in as it shows on your source.
Instead, the only thing you use the '541 for is as a source for numbers from specific columns into specific lines / columns / sections in OTHER standard forms and schedules as you're entering the '541 income as "Other Income". In fact, once you find the right documents, they specifically tell you not to even include the '541 when you submit your CA forms - saying that the trustee already submitted that '541 for each heir. All you really do is find the right doc (See below) that tells you how to "map" the data in the '541 lines and columns into sections, lines and columns in other forms - principally the 540NR that I thought of as the main income tax form for reporting CA income.
2.) Warning / Disclaimer: I am no Tax pro and offer no liability if this solution is wrong or wrong for you. Don't blame me if I was wrong. Get a certified Tax pro to be sure. But I ended up doing the following and ended up submitting the California return as generated by TTax Home & Business.
3.) Here's an example regarding my '541 which only had numbers in 4 columns in line 5. (This example is from the resource doc from the Official State of California source URL - see below):
If you have an amount on Schedule K-1 (541), line 5, column (c), report this amount on Schedule CA (540), Part I, Section B, line 5, or Schedule CA (540NR), Part 11, Section B, line 5, column B or column C, whichever is applicable.
Pretty straight-forward. You literally do as that statement reads and simply look at the data from the '541 location, read it, and - if it's not blank - write it into the destination form location it says. And that's it. In the '541 doc that broke this open for me, there's more or less a short, numbered paragraph for each line and column block in the '541. You go through the paragraphs one-at-a-time, do nothing if you have no data in the designated line / column, and at the end you're done.
if your '541, like mine, has a meaningful number in on a particular line, all you do is read the number in each of the '541 columns and manually enter them as directed.
4.) After more than a week of frustration, I finally discovered a great resource. It's the Franchise Tax Board Forms and Publications office on California's official state website. Go there and pull documents at least for the K-1 (541) and for the 540NR (The 540NR seems to be the primary State income tax doc for non-residents and part-time residents).
a.) Go to the Official State of California Tax website. To find it, do a Google or other search for search terms "ftb.ca.gov forms search". (The FTB stands for (State of California) Franchise Tax Board).
b.) Enter: Tax Year of "2025", Taxpayer Type of "Individual" , and Form Number and/or Keywords of "541" and click "Search". You'll see many lines of search hits.
c.) You'll get a number of hits. Ignore any '541 form / schedule / whatever listing that contains the word "Fiduciary". Those are only for use by the estate trustees that originally created and sent you your K-1 (541) and also a K-1 (1041). This is the reason much of the K1/541 advice on this forum is completely wrong - because many of the posters are thinking that - as the heir - you'll just select a TTax "K-1 (541) form to be directly entered.
d.) Once you click the form results line to download it - at least if it's a PDF, you'll get a pop-up dialog asking for the email address to which you want it sent. For the forms themselves, you just go straight for it. If you're on Windows, once the link or .PDF arrives in your email and you download it, you'll have to open the Downloads copy, right-click and select "Properties", and click "Unblock" for Windows to allow you to use it. That's pretty much standard these days for most downloads on Windows machines.
3.) For the '541, there were several different hits. Some were very terse or were so packed together they were much harder to read. Your mileage may vary. But the first such document that gave me hope shows up in the search return list as:
541 Schedule K-1 Instructions (pdf) 2025 Instructions for 541 Schedule K-1, Beneficiary's Share of Income, Deductions, Credits, etc
It's a short document - just a couple of pages - that lists instructions for every data piece of the '541 telling you whether and where to type it in. But it's really a quick reference; very terse and compact.
The second document- that much longer one with more detailed instructions that really rang my chimes - doesn't show up as a search result if you go to the ftb.ca.gov/forms/search to do the search - even if your search terms are correct. You only get the shorter doc referenced in "3.)" above.
I was frustrated that I couldn't re-create finding the longer booklet while writing this post. But then, I noticed that the FTB site "Forms and Publications" landing page of ftb.ca.gov/forms/index.html - BEFORE you select first "Forms"; then "Search"; has its OWN search box right on that landing page.
Go to that page and enter the following in THAT search box: "Beneficiary's Instructions for Schedule K-1 (541)" and click the search icon.
This time, you should see the search hit for: "2025 Beneficiary's Instructions for Schedule K-1 541 | FTB.ca.gov". At the time of writing this post, clicking that result that should yield a 9-page booklet showing which is the one that broke this whole puzzle open.
You can also get to that page directly from a google search of the same state website using google search terms rather than entering search terms on the FTB forms site landing page.
If you land on the correct search result page, you'll see a left side-bar "Related content" that contains a link to "Request printable PDF of this document" as well as a link to "Download 2025 Schedule K-1 (541) - something that you'll need if you're creating a paper form rather than still working through TTax.
Alternatively: In the browser URL bar, directly enter the same base site but directly reference the booklet: "(base .gov site as the previous)" + "/forms/2025/2025-541-k-1-instructions.html". That should return an .HTML page with the full booklet of information with the page Titles: "2025 Schedule K-1 (541) and a sub-title "Beneficiary's Instructions for Schedule K-1 (541)". If you have the right page, you should see links on the left to "Request printable PDF of this document". The instructions are much easier to read on this hit. It's the source of the example I cited earlier in this post.
Or, you can do a google search for "State of California Franchise Tax Board' and the name of the desired document.
5.) Warning: Pay particular attention to the type name of the destination document for each such data copy & paste transfer instruction paragraph. Note that the destination is often NOT labeled as a Form, but is instead is prefixed as something else like a Schedule, a Worksheet, etc. As in my example above where if the data in that Part / LineNumber / Column isn't blank, you copy it and type it into "Schedule CA (540NR), Part 11, Section B, line 5, column C." The Schedules, etc, ARE downloadable if you click on "Forms" and find the correct name.
6.) As described above, search the same resource for the Form 540NR, Schedule K-1 (541) and for any other form / schedule / whatever you find yourself needing.
7.) As you click on destination locations to enter a number, you can expect the User Interface (UI) to sometimes do a "Quick Zoom" screen change. This shoves the form you're trying to type input in aside and shows a zoomed-in partial region of the same or another form. I found this disconcerting at first, but finally made my peace with it.
8.) One last piece of advice: Following the instructions in these docs, I was able to completely create my California 540NR and all related forms. And I was VERY happy that 2025 Home & Business desktop allowed me to eFile the California Non-Resident State return - something that other references said was not yet supported.
Good luck, and I hope this long post helps!
