How can I transfer partially completed 2017 tax files from desktop to online?

UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019

Unfortunately, no.

You can transfer your previous year (2018)desktop TurboTax return into a current year (2019) TurboTax online return, but not the current year desktop return.

You can do the reverse -- you can download your current year tax file to the desktop version and finish it there.  To do this, please follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.  You will be on your Tax Home screen.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
  3. Select 2019 (if it's not already highlighted).
  4. Select Download .tax file.  The file with automatically download.
  5. Your online return will be found in the Downloads folder on your computer.
  6. To open the return in TurboTax desktop edition, click on the Find a Tax File link on the opening screen and then navigate to the Downloads folder.

The OP was asking for the same year. It seems this cannot be done. The only way to transfer from desktop to online was if you upload the previous year's desktop file; the current year cannot be uploaded.

I read where I can start my tax online and transfer to the desktop version - but seems impossible. I now have the desktop version and unable to transfer all data entered so far.
