I'm told that H&R Block has updated its software to eliminate repayment of the Advance Premium Tax Credits for ALL, including people over the 400% FPL cliff. If Intuit/TT don't have plans to update soon, I guess I'll switch software companies.

@DanaB27, I actually just put in the numbers for the varying scenarios to see how TurboTax handled then. For the first scenario, it allows me to put $1,050 each into both spouses' T-IRAs and the balances of $5,950 each into both spouses' Roth-IRAs, no problem. But when I tried the second scenario, putting $2,100 into one person's T-IRA (then $4,900 into that same person's Roth-IRA) and putting $7,000 into the other person's Roth IRA, it looks like it limits T-IRA deductibility to $1,050. So...the deductibility cannot be combined, but instead divided into each spouse's account. Interesting...but no big deal if that's the case. (We each had access to a workplace retirement account until becoming unemployed in March and April, respectively, 2020.)

Our situation: Both over 50 and therefore eligible to contribute $7,000 each for 2020. One of us has earned income under $7,000, but the other has earned income over $15,000, so the combined total exceeds $14,000 (2 contributions @ $7,000). Also, our MAGI is between $104,000 and $124,000, so we can't have full deductibility for the traditional IRA. Right now, TurboTax allocates $1,050 per spouse as deductible and $5,950 as non-deductible for T-IRA. Questions: 1. Can we allocate $1,050 each to the T-IRA and $5,950 each to our Roth IRAs? 2. If so, how do we do that? (Easily done with the software?) 3. Perhaps simpler, can one of us allocate $2,100 to our own T-IRA, putting the balance of $4,900 to our own Roth, while the other spouse allocates $7,000 to their Roth? 4. If so, how do we do that? Thanks!

@ColeenD3Thanks. Are you therefore acknowledging that the telephone tax experts consulting with the telephone support I received last Friday were wrong in saying that all updates related to the APR bill were complete? Intuit's communication has been atrocious, and I'd think you'd want to be careful about the information (or misinformation) given out.

@cbinharmony @ReneeM7122 @JamesG1 Health policy analysts say there is no cliff for forgiveness, as the APR text wipes out clawback for all. Waiting for Intuit to recognize this and update the software to reflect this. See more: https://www.healthaffairs.org/do/10.1377/hblog[phone number removed]37/full/

I spoke with customer support as an intermediary with Intuit's tax experts on Friday. They insisted that software updates are complete regarding APR (COVID Relief Bill). In the software, I see forgiveness of repayment of advance Premium Tax Credits up to 400% FPL, but not beyond. Health policy analysts believe that Intuit has got this wrong, and that the APR text wipes out clawback for everyone regardless of income (see, for example: https://www.healthaffairs.org/do/10.1377/hblog[phone number removed]37/full/). So what's the story?

@JeffreyR77, your reply exemplifies the poor communication/service I'm receiving from Intuit. I know the rules. In fact, I think I've got it clearer than the way you've explained it. You wrote "might not have to pay it back," but it's not "might." There's NO clawback for 2020. And the 8.5% you mention in the last sentence is for 2021-22, so it's irrelevant to my initial question. Furthermore, TurboTax Support on Twitter ( @TeamTurboTax) insists that the software updates regarding the COVID Relief Plan are completed. Inconsistency and ineptitude continue...

Intuit keeps claiming its update for COVID Relief Bill changes are completed, but I don't see it. Yes to the unemployment tax forgiveness, but no forgiveness on repayment of Premium Tax Credits for 2020. The very limited support through Twitter messages (that's "support"?) has been useless. I sent screenshots of my Form 8962, which shows money owed on both Lines 27 and 29. Unless I can force a "zero" on Line 28, I have to report Line 29 on Schedule 2 and therefore on my 1040. Any advice? (This user of TurboTax for over 25 years will likely turn elsewhere next year. I understand bumps in the road when it comes to software updates. The lack of communication and miscommunication, though, are unforgivable. Poor customer "service.")

DMarkM1's reply (@DMarkM1) is indicative of Intuit's misinformation and poor communication. While the software has been updated for the unemployment tax forgiveness, it's yet to be updated for PTC (Premium Tax Credits) for underpayment of ACA health insurance. As others have said in this overall forum, we can forgive Intuit for taking time (though not excessive) for changes due to complex legislation. Unforgivable is the atrocious and misleading communication.
