@TexasTea wrote: too bad there is no feedback loop from the IRS to find out what they actually do with a letter like that. I suppose if the only thing they do is scan it and file it, at least it will be there in the file at some future date when someone reviews everything I had no expectations they would save the letter. I wrote it solely to make the receiving clerk's job easier. It was about 3 sentences, 2 of which were "Enclosed please find two Forms 709" and "My wife and I together gifted community property in the amount of $_____ to _____" or words to that effect. Also, just in case I made a mistake filling out 709s for the first time, the clerk would understand my intent.

Just stumbled upon my old thread. When I mailed my Forms 709 last year, I mailed them in the same envelope even though "gift splitting" was not explicitly selected. I also included a brief letter explaining in English what the transaction was all about and stating that Mrs. Squirrel and I were gifting community property. I figure the simpler I could make it for the IRS, the smoother it would be handled. A year later, I haven't heard a peep from the IRS, as expected.

@DoninGA wrote: @RocketJSquirrel Don't know if this will help your situation or not but you can use Forms and then the 1099-B Worksheet to enter any sales. This will populate the preliminary Schedule D and Form 8949 and enter the gains or losses on the 1040. Thanks! That did get me closer to a plausible result.

Having read through all the above, I am still disappointed that there are not even preliminary forms available until 1/14 and later. My final estimated tax payment is due 1/15. I'd like to reduce my refund or amount due as close to zero as possible, but won't have the forms in time. A great solution would be for the IRS to extend the due date for the final estimated tax payment just because of the massive chaos that was 2020. Yoo-hoo, IRS! Are you listening? Nudge, nudge.

Attempting to import estimated tax payments from Quicken results in several strange confirmation prompts and finally only 1 out of 4 payments added to the return. Perhaps this is thanks to the changes in the due dates for 2020 because of COVID? The attachments below are out of order. I couldn't seem to get them inserted in the order they appeared, but hopefully you get the idea.
Nothing already existed in my return. This is importing into an empty virgin TT file with only last year's info transferred.

2015 State failed to download. It's expired. It's a bummer, because I had all these old versions installed & updated on my old PC, which I have since replaced.

I was also surprised the update happened, but I captured the progress. This leads me to believe I could actually use it.

Someone I know hasn't filed taxes since 2014 and would like to catch up starting with his 2015 federal and California returns. He's not, shall we say, tax savvy, and would like me to do his back taxes. I understand it's too late for him to get a refund for the earliest years. (I have no idea whether he owes or was owed.) But I can still use those old versions of TT Desktop for Windows to prepare his paper returns, right? I just reinstalled TT2015 Premier on my Win10 laptop and Federal seemed to install and update just fine. I haven't tried to load CA yet.

I'm retired and choose to pay estimated taxes rather than have tax withheld from distributions. Quicken's Tax Planner says my federal refund will be larger than my final 2020 estimated tax payment due in January. Assuming that's correct, do I need to make that last payment, or will I possibly run afoul of underpayment rules if I don't? I can't seem to find the answer in Pub 505.

I have recently been receiving emails from the 3 credit bureaus that my score has dropped. What am I doing differently? Using my credit cards to contribute large amounts of money to political campaigns. I am nowhere near reaching the limit on any of my cards (and I pay them in full every month), but for some reason, these large expenditures are hitting my credit score. I don't care at all because I don't need credit, but I find it interesting and a tish annoying.
