"Your transmission didn't go through We could not e-file your return for the following reason: A Federal return that matches this state return could not be found. The IRS requires that all linked state returns be filed after or in conjunction with the Federal return."
My Federal and State returns were Rejected due to some Crypto transaction. I have since fixed these issues. When I go back to re-file, I receive that error.
I have attempted to call Turbo Tax Customer Support, but they aren't much help at all
Have you fixed the rejected return yet before trying to refile?
Yes, I have.
I even had Customer Support on the phone with a Tier 2 Tech for over an hour, and we still couldn't fix it.
There is one screen that shows my Federal Return as Filed while my State Return as Rejected. I have no idea how to resolve this, and I've basically given up on doing my taxes.
We are aware of this and currently working towards a resolution. To sign up for updates and additional information, please see this Help Article.
Whatever you all did has resolved my issue.
I logged in, and was given an entirely different notice for re-submitting my taxes. When I re-filed, it allowed me to file both my federal and state at the same time.
Everything is good to go. I appreciate all the assistance.
I am also receiving this error message although my Federal return has already been filed. The Help Article link is no longer active.
@CandySC78 If you already e-filed your federal return on an earlier date, you have to wait until you know that the IRS accepted it before you can e-file your state. The state cannot accept your return until the IRS accepts your federal return. The IRS will not begin to accept/reject federal returns until January 29.
My wife and I live and work in different states. So, we filed Married Filing Jointly for Federal (via the website), and then after doing some online reading it seems that the way to do Married but filing separately for the state is to create a "mock" Federal return for each of our state returns. It also mentioned online that the Desktop Software is better for this.
I paid for and downloaded the desktop software and paid for downloading the process for each software, and then started working on one (paid to get Live Advice), and reached the stage to file, but it wont file and shows this message. Ofcourse the federal I submitted does not match but that is the point.
I dont know what else to do here. Any help would be appreciated. I just dont want to pay any more money without getting this thing done.
Although you can e-file your federal and state taxes together, if you choose to e-file your federal first, you'll have to wait until that return has been accepted before you can e-file your state.
If your federal return hasn't been accepted yet, or you printed and mailed it, you won't be able to e-file your state yet but you can print and mail a paper return.
Married filers: If you e-filed your federal using the joint married status, but you want to e-file your state returns separately, only one of you will be able to e-file. The other must paper-file their state return. See this help article for more information.
Follow the step-by-step instructions in this help article in order to file a joint Federal return and separate State returns. It recommends transferring the joint Federal return to Desktop if you started it in Online so that you can prepare additional mock separate Federal returns to match each State scenario without having to pay for multiple products (since Online only provides for one return for Federal and multiple states).
The TurboTax state program is designed to transfer information from your federal return. For this reason, TurboTax state isn't sold as a standalone tax-preparation product. You can use TurboTax to prepare and file your federal return without your state—but not the other way around.
