My boyfriend and I had a child in 2016. Since we aren't married and since my boyfriend is claiming him, should I do my taxes as if I haven't had a child/dependent?

Our son is on my boyfriends health insurance so we thought it best for him to claim him.

You are correct - you should file your taxes as if you haven't had a child, since your boyfriend is claiming your son. As to who should claim your son... if both of you qualify to claim him, you can choose who will. Generally, a person with higher income will benefit the most.
