Can a family member sign a joint return for there parent if due to a medical condition one parent is unable to sign?

One parent in household has had a stroke leaving them incapable of signing a joint Tax return for 2015.  Can the remaining spouse or a family member in good faith sign the 1040 form, page two for that person?

Can a family member sign a joint return for there parent if due to a medical condition one parent is unable to sign?

Yes, the remaining spouse can sign when filing a paper tax return:

  • If you file a joint return, both spouses must sign the return. If your spouse cannot sign because of a medical condition and requests that you sign the return, sign your spouse's name in the proper place followed by the word "by" (your signature), followed by the word "husband" or "wife." Be sure to also sign in the space provided for your signature. In addition, you must attach a statement that includes the form number of the return you are filing, the tax year, the reason your spouse cannot sign the return, and that your spouse has agreed to your signing for him or her. If you are the guardian for your spouse who is mentally incompetent, you may sign the return for your spouse as guardian. See: https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc301.html

Also, the remaining spouse can e-file and sign. See: https://www.irs.gov/Help-&-Resources/Tools-&-FAQs/FAQs-for-Individuals/Frequently-Asked-Tax-Question...
