Our son did church service in another state from January to Aug 5. He came home and we have been supporting him in college (tuition, dorm rent, books, food, etc). Do we claim him as dependent? He did not work or gain income in 2016.

Yes, if he didn't earn any income in 2016 and you paid for over half of his support for the year, then you can probably claim him. See below for more criteria.
