I was on my own personal health insurance through my state halfway through the year when my husband's company was being bought out by another and it would be best if we were both on the same plan under the company's insurance plan. After filling out the necessary information through his work and cancelling my plan, we had discovered that we did not get on a policy and they said we had "declined" insurance. When asked for proof of this, they could not give it to us. Being that I have medical issues, I need to be on insurance. I tried to get back onto my original plan, but was sent a letter from the insurance company stating that I did not meet the "qualifying life changes" to get back on. I also could not get onto their temporary plan, or any plan. This had left me without insurance for 6 months last year, and now with a hefty fine. Is there any way to file for an exemption in this situation? Would it qualify as a hardship of some sort? We are at a loss as to what to do. Not only was I not able to have the medical treatments I needed at that time, but now I am getting fined for it.

Since there are no set parameters of what a hardship is, I would recommend applying for the hardship exemption (you could even copy and paste your entry from here). If it is granted, you will be able to avoid the penalty. I think you made than a good effort and was unable to get the insurance due to issues you had no control over. Go to
