working on two states TX CA

Hello,

Spouse got job in CA end of 2024 and working for about 2 weeks in 2024. Other spouse has working in TX all along in 2024. We plan to file jointly. as we know , TX does not have state taxes, Few questions.

1. Is CA State filing required for the person working in CA. they would not considered CA non resident. what to define as "State of residence" in the personal info when we start the turbo tax software.

2. Real estate investment in TX done by person working on TX, I  hope would not added in CA filing. how to handle this?

1. You would have to look at the charts to see if you have to file a California tax return: Filing requirements.  If spouse is changing residency (permanent move to California) then you would have to file as part-year resident; otherwise you would be a nonresident.

2. California taxable income of a nonresident is calculated as if all income were earned in California.  The Federal Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) will be adjusted using the California adjustments to arrive at AGI from all sources. The AGI from all sources is used to determine the taxable income. After the taxable income is calculated, it is prorated using a percentage of the AGI from California sources divided by the AGI from all sources. This prorated tax is the California tax.
