The TurboTax program will award you with the filing status that you qualify for based on the information you enter. In general, you must have paid more than half the cost to run your home for a qualifying individual. You must meet the qualifications below to qualify for the head of household filing status:

After you answer all the questions about yourself and your dependents at the beginning of your return, we'll let you know if your situation qualifies for Head of Household.
You can also revisit these questions by selecting My Info (online) or Personal Info (software), and then select Edit next to your name or your dependent's.
Note: There can only be one head of household per address.
I have a dependent that I have claimed that qualifies me as head of household and turbo tax is not allowing it-- it keeps switching me back to single. is it a glitch?
You should revisit the My Info section (using TurboTax Online) or Personal Info section (using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax) to review the questions asked about your dependent and filing status. You may have misread something that is causing you to be ineligible to use the Head of Household filing status.
