Why is turbo tax charging me a fee?

Because something in your return required an upgrade.

I suggest TurboTax Free File Edition. While the name is similar to Free Edition, there are no upgrade fees.

To you qualify

Make less than $34,000 a year or

Qualify for the Earned Income Credit or

Active military making less than $66,000

Why is turbo tax charging me a fee?

You are reaching out to us from TurboTax Deluxe, which there is a fee to use. TurboTax Free Edition is for filers that use a simple 1040 with no additional schedules. If your tax situation requires additional forms/schedules, you will be prompted to upgrade.  Please refer to this FAQ for information on why TurboTax is requiring you to upgrade:

If you feel your situation still meets the requirements for TurboTax Free Edition you can use the Clear and Start Over Feature as long as you have not submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered. Please see this FAQ for assistance with starting over:
