Why is my federal refund higher than the calculation on the tax return?

I paper-filed my tax return and finally received the notification from the IRS that my tax refund is approved and will be sent in a few days. However, my refund is significantly higher than the amount on Form 1040 calculated by TurboTax and the notice says that: "We changed the amount claimed as Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return. The error was in one or more of the following:

  • You (or your spouse if married filing jointly) used an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and there is no indication that one spouse was a member of the Armed Forces of the United States at any time during the tax year, so that an exception does not apply to the rule that both spouses must have a Social Security number."

This section is applicable because I filed jointly and my wife used an ITIN, but I am currently still active duty in the Armed Forces. Should I be concerned with the discrepancy and contact the IRS to explain that the exception applies to us, or should I just leave it as is? I'm just afraid they would find out it was some kind of mistake and deduct the money next year.

In the program you failed to indicate you were active duty military which would get you the higher RRC and the IRS corrected your error ... all is good.
