LOL ... the 2022 program will not be available until Nov or Dec and will not be fully functional until late Jan 2023 at best. The 2021 program is used to file a 2021 return and not starting the 2022 return.

Are you confused by the tax year? The tax year that you can currently file a tax return for is the tax year that ended on December 31, 2021. So you prepare and file a 2021 tax return now during 2022. Next year, when tax year 2022 ends, you will prepare and file a tax return for 2022----which you cannot file until 2023.
The current online software is only for a 2021 tax return. If you just purchased the CD/download and tried to use it, you were using 2021 software. If you purchased it by mistake, call customer support. The software for 2022 will not be available until mid to late November. You will not be able to actually file a 2022 return until late January or early February.
