Why does turbo tax say I am getting a $1096 refund then on the next screen $0 refund?

When I click "amend my return" the number corrects to $1096, but I didn't file a return already... What gives?

Make sure you follow these guidelines when amending:

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted, you should follow these guidelines. 

• You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed. 
• You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return. 
• Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.  
• The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due 
• Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending. 
• You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Did you  file the first return?  If not you do NOT amend.   You need to undo the amended return.   You should click on Add a State to let you back into your return.  When you start to Amend it resets the refund monitor to 0.

How do I cancel or undo an amended return in TurboTax Online?

If you started amending your tax return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment, follow the steps below. You'll need to undo any changes you made during the amendment process.

1. Open your return if it isn't already open
2. From the menu, select Cancel Amend
3. Select Yes, I want to cancel my amended return and Continue
4. Remove any forms or changes you made to your return before or after the amend process was canceled
5. Add back in any forms you deleted while amending your return
