Some "Financial Partners" use the Document ID and some use your regular login information. Follow the directions for your broker.
Vanguard asks for a document ID, and the instruction says, "Use the account number and Document ID from the top banner on page one of your 1099 statement", but there is no doc ID anywhere near the top of the 1099. A Google query reveals that the TIN could be the SSAN. I used several formats for entry: XXX-XX-####, ###-##-#### (where # = a number) and none of them worked. I have a brokerage account and a traditional IRA, each which have different account numbers; neither work. This is a mess and I've spent at least 2 hours trying to figure it out.
Your Vanguard tax document has a Document ID.
It is on Page 1.
Leave out the blanks when you type it.
despite Vanguard's statement about the use of document IDs, they are only used for brokerage accounts and not fund accounts. I have 2 fund accounts, but thought one was a brokerage account, therefore the problem. when I imported the 1099s for a fund account, I used my regular login and it worked fine. I've suggested their statement about offering document IDs distinguish the investments to which it applies.
Thanks for your reply which inspired me to determine why I had this problem.

different financial institutions use different methods to allow import into Turbotax (they must partner with Turbotax to allow import). some just require your regular user name and password, others ssn and document ID, and others someother info
