Without
knowing your exact tax situation, it's hard to determine why
you owe taxes to your State this year. The most likely reason is that you just
didn't have enough State Taxes withheld from your paycheck(s), and/or you
didn't have any deductions or credits to offset your income. This leaves
more income to be taxed resulting in a lower refund or the need to pay
additional taxes with your return.
One thing you can do to help understand why there is a
difference, you can compare last year's state return with this year's state
return line by line to see what is different. You can also compare your
W2's from both years to see if there are any major differences.
