Why do I owe Federal tax but get a refund on State tax?

Federal and State tax laws differ, so the calculations that are used on the federal level are different than the state. It is not uncommon to owe either federal and/ or state and get a refund from the other.

You withholdings might be different as well on your income. If you are having more federal taxes withheld on your paychecks than state taxes, that can be a reason why as well.
