Why didn't turbotax complete or efile my form 8949? According to your help, it should have but it didn't so now I need to file form 8543 and complete and mail 8949?

I am really annoyed by this. I buy turbotax expressly so I don't have to print out, complete and file forms through the mail. If I am going to have to do that anyway, I am going to quit buying your product. Why was the form efiled last year but not this year?

This is "operator error" not "TurboTax" error.

When you use the "Stocks, Mutual Funds, Bonds, Other" interview and tell TurboTax that you've received a 1099-B, the first question TurboTax asks is if you will enter "one sale at a time" or if you will enter "a summary for each sales category."  This is unchanged from last year's interview.

If you select "one sale at a time" then you enter each and ever sale you've made over the year, TurboTax places each and every sale on the appropriate Form(s) 8949 covering sales categories "A", "B" "D" and "E", and that information is e-filed as part of your income tax return.

If you select "a summary for each sales category" - and this would be appropriate where you maybe have thousands of trades and your broker has provided either the Form(s) 8949 or suitable substitutes - then you simply enter summary information - basically ALL proceeds and ALL cost bases - for each sale category "A", "B" "D" and "E" and then you mail in the required Form 8949 information which contains the detail.

This, too, is unchanged from last year's interview.

You obviously selected the option to report "a summary for each sales category".

Did you fill in Schedule D?   That automatically auto-fills the 8949.

That is a crap response by Intuit. If this was going to be the case, the user should be warned BEFORE NOT AFTER, they efile.

Intuit please fix your business design to remove this annoying issue. I have the same experience and need to mail the 8949 forms  owing to your wrong design. This is more about import the transaction details from brokers. Since I already import data, I don't need to manually input the items. And your software ignore this and the questions are confusing. You should show another option which is asking if the detail transactions are already imported.  In the other hand , a smart check could be another option. In my generated tax filing document, I have 11 pages of 8949 form. Machine learning is not that hard to be implemented to detect this kind of pattern right? Why not ask the users if already have the 8949 fully input or import at last step?

If you're e-filing, you only need to mail copies of your 8949 along with Form 8453 if:

  • You entered a summary for one or more sales categories (instead of each individual sale); AND
  • The sales category for one or more summaries is something other than Box A (short-term covered) or Box D (long-term covered); or
  • The Box A and/or Box D summary includes adjustments (typically listed in boxes 1f or 1g on your broker statement).

I think you guys still don't get the point. There is no difference from mailing one form comparing to mailing multiple forms. Most people use efile because they don't want to mail any form.  It is not hard for Intuit to improve this feature. I'm so disappointed on all the reply in this thread. Instead of passing customers' concern to the right product team to improve your product, you spend time on arguing with customers.  I'm wondering what is your customer service team's goal.

I haven't gotten to this part yet but last year (TT premier online) after entering the summary Turbotax allowed us to attach a PDF of our 8949, actually there was a screen asking if we wanted to attach anything which we did.

I hope the feature still exists this year but I wonder why if you entered summary totals you weren't given the option to attach a pdf of your 8949?

Yes, if you are using TurboTax Online then you can attach a .pdf of your Form 8949. TurboTax CD/Download option for attaching a .pdf is not available.

Well, it is encouraging to see a TT person accept that this needs to be updated. When giving the option to enter SUMMARY DATA, we need to know that the choice may lead to an hour's worth of copying, printing, mailing - not exactly the customer experience I expected from an efiling software program.

TurboTax will not allow me to efile my federal and state returns due to a negative partnership basis on Form 8949.  Last year (2021) I was able e-file with Form 8949 (though it was positive sale figure).  I only have one transaction so why on earth would I be forced by Turbo Tax to file a paper return for Federal and state?? I don't believe my case is user error.
