Why am I being told I cannot e-file because Form 8283 requires a donee signature and this is not supported by TurboTax for e-file? Database says 8283 is ready for e-file.

Upon final review, while attempting to e-file, I get a message indicating Form 8283 requires a donee signature, but TurboTax does not support electronic filing of this form. This has never been an issue in the past and I have used TurboTax for over 15 years. I checked the forms database and is says Form 8283 is ready for e-file, but I still get this message. Can you please advise if this is going to be rectified, and if so, when?

Since your return is being rejected with a message saying "You have an entry on Form 8283, Donee Acknowledgement which required a donee's signature, electronic attachment is not supported," you will need to print out and mail your tax return.

The taxing agency has implemented new standards for 2024 tax returns that essentially says if Form 8382 has a noncash donation where the donee is listed, then the form must be signed.

Please follow the steps here to print and file your tax return.

Other posts say the form wasn’t ready in turbo tax now Turbo tax is saying it has to be hand signed no matter what? Why is there a discrepancy?

Well you can get your money back for Turbo within 60 days, H& R Block lets you efile form 8283  just saying turbo tax is screw every one out of it

Can you help to explain the following?

the IRS instruction from the website (12/2024) said "The written acknowledgment required to substantiate a charitable contribution of $250 or more". If a contribution (one item) is not more than $250, it doesn't say anywhere that Donee's signature is required.

According to IRS website 8283 form part V specific instruction, not anyone at the charity organization can sign the 8283 form. "The person acknowledging the gift must be an official authorized to sign the tax returns of the organization, or a person specifically designated to sign Form 8283."

Also, the donee org is not required to complete the form. IRS website "The donee organization is not required to complete Part V for each member's Form 8283."

It seem not allowing e-file and requires a signature by the donee, but the donee is not required to sign is not reasonable.

What can I do now since it's so close to tax filing? Do you (or Turbo Tax) have a suggestion?

I donated to Goodwill and no item is more than $250, folks at the donation site had no idea who should sign the form. I seriously doubt Goodwill will sign the tax form, as thousands, if not tens of thousands of people donated there, especially that they are not required to sign the tax forms.

Intuit is lying.

The updated 2024 Form 8283 instructions have an extremely clear allowance for e-Filing this form when a signature is required:

"If you are electronically filing your tax return, you must include the Form 8283 data in the electronic submission. Enter all information requested by a line of the Form 8283 on the electronic Form 8283, except for the required signatures.

You must attach the completed Form 8283 with all the required signatures to your tax return, either as a PDF attachment when electronically filed, or mailed to the IRS with Form 8453."

The 8453 route is exactly what I used the last time I needed to send in a signed version of this form.  And even assuming Intuit can't be bothered to implement the functionality to attach a PDF, the allowance for mailing just the signed form and e-Filing the rest has not changed.

It's too much of a pain to go elsewhere for this year, but if Intuit is going to be this poor, I'll go elsewhere for next year.

Turbo tax program, I believe is flawed when it comes to the donations and form 8283.

It is lumping multiple same line items to get an amount, ignoring the fact that it isn't just one item. Example: Goodwill donation of 25 t-shirts @ $10 each =$250. It views it as a single item of $250 instead of 25 items. I got the same notice as many others saying I couldn't e-file because I needed form 8283, and it needed to be signed by the donee.

Work around SOLUTION:

I'm not sure if the trigger for this form is the $250 single item,  or $5000 total donations on the same day.  I had lumped a couple donation days together.  I went back, made sure no line item was $250 or more, and separated the donation days, making sure no single donation DAY total was $5000 or more. (Example- Goodwill overall can be more than $5000, just not on the same date, but you can have multiple dates of donation totaling more than the $5000).

After this adjustment, I no longer have a need for Form 8283, and now I can e-file my return.

Good luck

If that's the case, it's a new bug introduced, as I have the same situation last year (no single item that's >$250, but total donation a day, some were >$5000), and probably the year before, it never asked for Donee signature and I was able to e-file. the $5000 applies to organization donation of similar items.

The response from Turbo Tax is that there is a new rule by IRS. However, after I spent hours on IRS website and 8232 instructions, I don't think the rule has changed. "The donee organization that received the property described in Part I of Section B must complete and sign the Donee Acknowledgment in Part V." Above does not fit any in Part I of Section B. Only situations fit in Part 1 of Section B requires Donee to sign the acknowledge form. In the cases of most people on this thread that suddenly not able to do e-file, the Donee is not even required to sign the form for us.

Also, under IRS website for 8232 form, what's new: "filers submitting Form 8283 reporting a noncash charitable contribution of more than $5,000 to fully complete Section B." the requirement is to complete section B. Doesn't necessarily mean you have to fill the area that your situation doesn't apply, including the signatures that are not needed. I think this may be what Turbo Tax introduced this year. It lump all items in a house hold as 1 line. If it separates clothes, footwear, furniture, cook ware (pans, air fryer, microwave) maybe computer & some other stuff as equipment, etc. into different lines, then for me, each line will be much less than $5000. Or if Turbo Tax can provide an option to add lines of description of donated property (it says if you need more space, attach a separate attachment), that's will also avoid this.

Problem for most people is that we try to get all the stuff we want to donate into a big load at the end of the year so that we can drove to the donation places less. Then we only get 1 receipt for all the items we donate. I even borrowed a van or truck when I have a lot of stuff especially furniture to donate. Before COVID, I can leave them on my drive way, and put a flyer for the donation truck to pick up that day. After COVID, I have to drove to donation places.
