Why am i being charged to file

Are you filing a state return as well? If you are using Federal Free Edition, federal is free but state download of the software is an additional cost. You can see that here as well https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/online/

When using that version, you are only charged when adding a state, adding other add-ons or upgrading to a paid version of the software.
