It doesn't appear to have been applied even though it appears on the 1040 schedule 1. Why?

The educator expense amount does not appear on Form 1040, but it is subtracted from your income before the tax is calculated. The educator expense deduction is included in the total on Schedule 1 line 36. On Form 1040 the total from Schedule 1 line 36 is subtracted from the total income on Form 1040 line 6 to calculate the Adjusted Gross Income on Form 1040 line 7.
