The state of Georgia will grant you a tax extension in the case of absence, sickness or other disability, or whenever there is reasonable cause. Use Georgia Tax Form IT-303 (Application for Extension of Time for Filing State Income Tax Returns) to request a state tax extension from the Georgia Department of Revenue.
If you successfully obtained a Federal tax extension, you will automatically get a state extension of time to file your Georgia tax return. Therefore, you do not need to submit Form IT-303 to request a separate Georgia tax extension — just make sure that a copy of your approved federal tax extension is attached to your Georgia tax return when filed. Remember that you are still required to pay any state income tax due for that year by the original filing deadline (usually April 15th).
If you want to apply for a Georgia state tax extension and you did not get a Federal tax extension, you must file Form IT-303 with the Georgia Department of Revenue and explain why you did not request a Federal filing extension.
If you get a Georgia tax extension and you owe any state income tax for that year, your payment is still due by your tax return’s original filing deadline (typically April 15) regardless of whether you have to file Form IT-303. Income tax payments can be made online or by using Georgia Tax Form IT-560 (Individual and Fiduciary Payment Voucher). Make sure you pay any income tax due on-time to avoid penalties and interest charges.
