Where do I enter my Homestead Exemption when filling my 2020 taxes?

If you are referring to Michigan's Form MI-1040CR, then these details will be entered in the State interview.

Be sure to include the Taxable Value. If the Taxable value is up to $135,000 and Household Resources, including the Economic Impact Payments, is up to $60,000, the Property Tax Credit can be claimed for up to $1,200.

To get back to this entry in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  • From the left menu, select State
  • Continue and then by Michigan, select Edit
  • At Your 2020 Michigan taxes are ready for us to check, scroll to Credits and taxes and select Edit
  • Under Personal, home, and family credits, see Homestead Property Tax Credit and select Revisit
  • Take a look at Michigan credits and taxes and select Edit
  • Do you want to review your total household resources? select No for now
  • Do you want to review your homestead property tax credit entries? select Yes
  • Answer the questions until you get to the Enter Property Tax Information screen where you can enter the Taxable Value, which can be found on your property tax bill. If you do not have that, it can be looked up online.
    • To find your taxable value of your principal residence online, follow these steps:

      • Go to: Michigan Municipal Directory
      • From there, enter your county
      • Next, scroll and click on your city or township
      • Enter your address
      • Click on your name or parcel ID
      • Scroll to General Information for 2020 and find your Taxable Value just below the Assessed Value

      • Otherwise, you would need to call your city or township assessor and ask them, "What is my property's taxable value?"

      • If you do not own, but rent, then enter the total you paid for 12 months of rent.

To read the directions, go to 2020 MI-1040CR Instructions beginning on page 31.
