Where can I put MCTMT estimated taxes in TurboTax (metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax)

Hi all,

As a former NYC resident, I had to send estimated taxes for the state, the city and to the MCTMT. TurboTax allows me to enter the state and city taxes but I haven't seen a place so far where I could submit the MCTMT taxes I paid. Please can anyone tell me where I can do that?

Many thanks

In the New York interview in TurboTax, you will have the opportunity to specify that payments to MCTMT were entered in the Federal return that are allocable to New York, but not to transmit estimated payments to MCTMT.

Please see this webpage for information on how to transmit payments to MCTMT online.

The metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax (MCTMT) is a tax imposed on certain employers and self-employed individuals engaging in business within the metropolitan commuter transportation district (MCTD). This department administers the tax for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The MCTD includes the counties of New York (Manhattan), Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Rockland, Nassau, Suffolk, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester.

Thanks for the response. This is not what I meant though: I know how to transmit payments to MCTMT online, and have done this throughout the year. The question is how do I report these payments through TurboTax: I see an option to report federal, state level and even New York City taxes, but no MCTMT. How can this be done through TurboTax?

Many thanks

Your MCTMT estimated payments are entered through the NY state tax return.  Follow these steps:

  • Look for the section titled 'Take a look at New York Credits and Taxes'.
  • Scroll down to the New York City and Metro Commuter Taxes section at the bottom of the page.
  • Click Start or Update beside Metro Commuter Transportation District Self-Employment Income.
  • As you go through this section, there will be an option to enter the payments that you already made.

@AnnetteB6 I can not find this section "Take a look at New York Credits and Taxes". Where should I look for this section? Nothing comes up when I try searching for "Take a look at New York Credits and Taxes" or "New York City and Metro Commuter Taxes" in the search bar.

You will not be able to find it by using the search function.  As I was taking a look in the program to see if the instructions shared previously had changed, I noticed that for some reason, the option to enter information for Metro Commuter Transportation District Self-Employment Income does not show up as an option if you are using TurboTax Online.  It can be found if you are using one of the desktop versions of TurboTax.

This situation is being reported to the development team for correction, but it will not be corrected in time to meet the filing deadline.

You may want to consider using a desktop version of TurboTax to file your returns if you are currently using TurboTax Online and you need to include the MCTMT as part of your return.

Take a look at the following TurboTax help article to learn how to change to a desktop version:

@AnnetteB6 -Thank you for confirming that as of 4/7/25 the 2024 Turbo Tax Self Employed Online Version doesn't fully support self employed individuals from New York who live in zone 1 and 2 because of the omission of MCTMT section. I'm really disappointed in T.T.

I spent 3 futile hours trying to figure this out yesterday. Amazingly, it appears as of 10pm 4/8/2025 an MCTMT section is available on Turbo Tax Online now. Can you confirm? It looks like I can choose to "work on MCTMT" and allocate "using a different method" and add my estimated MCTMT payments.

I was wrong in my previous answer stating that the MCTMT section is not available using TurboTax Online.  I apologize for the confusion.

If you have positive income from self-employment reported on your return, then the option to enter the MCTMT information as part of your NY state tax return is available as it should be.  If there is no self-employment income or if it is a loss, then the option is not available.

Unfortunately, my test file had negative self-employment income and therefore it appeared as if the MCTMT option was not there.
