Because in some states when you apply for unemployment benefits it is one of the questions you are asked.

@jeffreyt2000 Then you will need to ask your employer for that number. The employer puts an Employer Identification Number in box b of your W-2. If that is not the number you need in order to get unemployment compensation then you will have to get the number from the employer.
