When I file, with federal (mail) and state (electronic) I get into this infinite loop ID/fix errors/file by mail/back to ID. can't get out of this loop

Please be aware that you will not be able to e-file your State return if you haven't e-filed your Federal return. You will have to mail your State return as well.
