My friend is trying to create a federal tax return on TT but the system will not allow him to put in a dummy 000-00-000 social security number or even leave it blank. He want's to paper file it with W-7 form so that he could get an ITIN. Is it okay if he puts 000-00-001 for SSN or what else can he do? Thanks!

you should still be able to print out the return even with the SSN/ITIN blank. just ignore the error message. be sure to attach w-7 when filing along with any withholding forms.
@Anonymous
I tried but it says "before we can move on the the file section, we need you to enter your social security number. Select complete my return to enter this information"
So i have no idea how to bypass it. It takes me back to the personal info where I have to enter the SSN.
Use 999-88-9999. Print the return and cover the fake SSN with white-out before mailing the tax return and the W-7 (in the same envelope) to the address for processing the W-7 application.
Quick questions hoping to get more clarity.
1. Are the federal and state returns and W7 application all mailed to the same place ?
2. Besides 1) federal return, 2) state return, 3) W7 application, anything else is needed to be mailed in, and to where ?
Thanks.
No, the federal and state forms are sent to different places if mailed. Where you mail them varies based on where you live and which state you file to as well as if you owe a balance, or are due a refund.
Check your printed TurboTax forms package for mailing instructions for the federal and state returns. If you are filing by mail, TurboTax will include mailing instructions for the Federal and each state return with the complete printed package.
Attach documents to your Federal return as instructed on the front of the return. Copy B is for the Federal return. If you are mailing your nonresident state return. and their instructions say to include a copy of the federal return with no attachments, then don't include other attachments.
See this TurboTax help article for more information.
You also have other options besides mailing for the W-7 application. You can make an appointment at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, or with a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) in your area. That way, you can show the required documents in person rather than mailing them.

"Attach documents to your Federal return as instructed on the front of the return"
Quick question. I have many receipts, lots of statements related to my home and rentals, and other misc docs. Do I attach all these docs to my federal return ? It's a lot. I also don't want to mail in the original docs. So if I make photocopy of them it's a lot of work too. Thoughts ?
Thanks.
Just W-2 and any 1099 documents.
Do you have a Social Security Number or ITIN?
These answers were for taxpayers with no tax ID number.
Thanks.
1. Do I need to mail in the original W2 and 1099s or can I mail in photocopies of them ?
2. For 1099, I have Copy B and Copy 2. Which one is for federal and which one is for the state ?
1. You should mail the original copy B to the federal.
2. Copy 2 is for state.
You keep the rest so you can send a photocopy, if needed.
Thanks.
I have a SSN but my nonresident alien wife living overseas has none and is not eligible for a SSN and I don't plan on applying for an ITIN for her. I want to file married filing separately but I am not sure if I can e-file MFS via TurboTax online.
No, you will need to mail it. See How should I file my taxes if my spouse is a nonresident alien?

In this situation, e-filing is allowed by the IRS specification, but Turbotax does not support it. You will probably need to use a fake ITIN to get the program to allow you to print, try 999-88-9999. Then on the printed return, use some white-out to cover up the fake ITIN, and write "NRA" on the blank space next to "If you checked the MFS box, enter the name of your spouse."
Thanks.

Quick question. I see my spouse name on that space in my completed returns done by TurboTax. Do I just write NRA next to her name ? Because I saw your old comment in the past "However, don't enter the name of the spouse, enter "NRA" instead." yet TurboTax already put my spouse name there for me.
