This return has been rejected by the IRS, because a dependent on this return has filed their own tax return without indicating they would be claimed as a dependent. The dependent's Social Security number (SSN) cannot be used on two separate tax returns, without that indication.
If multiple dependents are present in this return, review the Description field. There will be a number in brackets, [?], that identifies which dependent is causing this reject. For example: "[2]" will identify the second dependent from the top. Verify that the dependent's information has been entered accurately. Correct any misspellings, omissions, or transpositions. Make sure the dependent SSN is entered correctly.
If you want to electronically file this return and claim the dependent, an Identity Protection PIN will be required.
I have obtained my dependent ID PIN and they have amended 2025 on their form. How can I fix mine to re e-file?
If a dependent mistakenly indicated no one can claim them and causes a rejection of the parent's return, the IRS now allows the first-listed (primary) taxpayer (such as the parent) to get an IP PIN and still successfully efile and avoid having to file a return on paper. Your dependent will need to amend their return to indicate someone else is claiming them. See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.
The IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.
You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.
Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:
Or another way:
Hello - In my case, the dependent refiled and changed the indication so that someone else can claim them as a dependent. Their amended filing was over a week ago. Do I still need to create a PIN and use the PIN when I file? Or can I just refile? If I can just refile, how long do I need to wait?
Thank you!
Yes, you should still go ahead and create the PIN, this way can file the return right away because the return they corrected will take some time to process.
