What is the standard deduction for checking box 6a on Form 1040 for 2016, married, filing jointly?

Both of us were born before 1952, but there are no further instructions to refer to as to why boxes 6a have a different standard deduction for people over 65 who are filing jointly.  Turbo Tax has put $15100 in the deduction space, but doesn't explain why.

The tax law provides for a higher standard deduction for seniors

Your standard deduction starts at $12,600.

  • Add $1,250 if you were born before January 2, 1952.
  • Add $1,250 if your jointly-filing spouse was born before January 2, 1952.
  • Add $1,250 if you were blind as of December 31, 2016.
  • Add $1,250 if your jointly-filing spouse was blind as of December 31, 2016.

Example: Joint filers Pat and Tracy, who were both born in 1941 and are not blind, have a standard deduction of $12,600 + $1,250 + $1,250 = $15,100.
