What is a Nonstandard W-2?

Please explain what a typewritten W-2 form is. I received several W-2s and while the format varies slightly, the boxes are filled in with text which seems to me all W-2s are typewritten. I need to understand when I need to check the Nonstandard W-2 box.

What is a Nonstandard W-2?

"As of preparing 2019 taxes, standard W-2 forms can include:

  • IRS forms received in the mail, directly from your employer. Verify the mailing address matches your employer's address (for example, check it against the address as on your pay stubs). If in doubt, check with your employer’s Human Resources department.
  • IRS forms received via email directly from your employer's Human Resources department. Confirm the email address is one they use.
  • IRS forms accessed from your employer's internal website or a service provider’s website. They will reflect information on your pay stub. Some common service provider websites include WorkDay, ADP, and UltiPro.

Some examples of non-standard forms include:

  • Typewritten forms created with an actual typewriter (this doesn’t include computer-generated forms with type font)
  • Hand-written forms
  • Altered forms that are marked up in any way"

A non-standard W2 does include handwritten, typewritten or a W2 that is changed in any way.

When entering your W-2 information in Turbo Tax, the program will ask you if you have any "Uncommon situations" - such as Non-standard W-2, which you have. Indicate yes - the program will then direct you to complete form 4852, please do so. Form 4852 cannot be e-filed, (an IRS rule) - which means you will need to print out this form, along with the rest of your tax return and mail it in to the IRS.
