What if I dont have all of my W2s by the tax deadline?

I am missing one of my W2s and its is the deadline to file. Will I still be able to get the refund next year or later?

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

.........and, IF using the "Online software" you just need to file before mid-October....after that the 2022 software shuts down completely.....and you won't be able to e-file 2022 any longer.

After mid October, you could still use the 2022 Desktop software (if you have a full Windows or Mac computer.), but would have to mail-file on paper after approx. mid-October.

______

Just get that missing W-2 and don't delay in getting it input into yoru tax file, and getting it all filed ASAP.  DON't procrastinate until October !

and...anotehr ANNND, just in case you are thinking of doing this (yes people sometimes do attempt it)

No, you cannot file the missing 2022 W-2 with next year's 2023 tax file...it must go on your 2022 tax file, along with all yoru other 2022 data..

Yes----that comment about "next year" concerns me.  You cannot put 2022 income on a 2023 return next year, if that is what you meant.   Your 2022 W-2's must go on a 2022 tax return, so try to get it all together and file it before online and e-filing close down in October.

Okay so I have until October to file. Then whats the tax deadline for If I can file my refund until then? Im debating on filing today without one of my W2s to make sure I get some of my refund but if I can wait until I get my last one, file later, I can still get paid?

The IRS will issue a refund if it is due, clarify what you mean by "I can still get paid?"

No...don't file until you get that W-2.

IF you file without it, and get a refund now...and then "Amend" later to get the missing W-2 entered, you will likely owe some of it back, with perhaps a penalty added onto it too.

You are supposed to enter everything you know is supposed to go into your tax file.   Or file an extension, to allow you more time.
________

Why the deadline?  Many people don't really know if they will owe more or not...the April deadline is to get all the procrastinators to get their taxes in, and any extra the y owe paid in on-time.  IF they set any other deadline, then a gazillion other folks would just continue ignore their filings, or make excuses until whatever the date is...there has to be some deadline. ~15 April is IT every year!
