You only have to enter a 1095A if you had marketplace health insurance from healthcare.gov. If you did not have that kind of health insurance you answer no when it asks about it and you keep going.
If you live in one of the states with a penalty for not having health insurance, that will be dealt with on your state return.
States that have mandates for health insurance
The only places with an individual mandate for health insurance are:
- California
- District of Columbia
- Massachusetts
- New Jersey
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
Qualifying plans, exemptions and penalty criteria differ by state, so it’s important to make sure you know the fine print of your state’s system.
