It's abroad (in a foreign country), not abode. Did she live in a country other than the USA?

It depends.    Is the question asking:

  • Did she live abroad for at least 6 months out of the year; or
  • Was your main home located in the U.S. for 6 or more months during 2021?

Depending on what section of the return you are working it, the question may be asked differently.   If the wording is similar to the first question above, then did she reside outside of the United States for at least 6 months out of the year.  If so, answer Yes.

The second question was her main hoe located in the U.S. for 6 or more months during 2021?   If she did not live outside of the U.S. then the answer to this question is Yes..

Some credits are contingent upon whether or not she resided in the United States for at least 6 months out of the year.
